Mahebourg
Mahébourg is a small city (population 15,753 as of 2000) on the southeastern coast of the island of Mauritius. It is the capital of the Grand Port District. The well-planned wide streets in the old section of Mahébourg still bear testimony to this Dutch and French colonial past. After the French chose Port Louis as the main port Mahébourg declined into a sleepy coastal city. The past is still preserved today in the Historical Naval Museum which also recounts the epic naval battles of the past between the French Navy and the Royal Navy. The Dutch historical museum in Grand Port recounts the early Dutch settlement of the island.
Tour of Ile aux Aigrettes Island

Tour of Ile aux Aigrettes Island
Tour of Ile aux Aigrettes Island
The boat trip to Ile aux Aigrettes departs from Pointe Jerome (near Mahebourg) and operated on daily basis.

Ile aux Aigrettes is a tiny coral island (25 hectares) just off the coast of the town of Mahebourg. The island has been declared a nature conservation site and today is being preserved by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation.

The tour on Ile aux Aigrettes takes about one and half hours with an additional 10 minutes each way for the boat trip. As part of this tour you will discover Ile aux Aigrettes and enjoy original Mauritian nature with an expert guide alongside leading the way. You will discover plants and animals, unique to Mauritius and found nowhere else in the world. Some of them have come close to extinction like the pink pigeon, a bird that was in danger of extinction for many years.

You will also visit the indigenous plant nursery. There you should look out for the rare pink pigeon, the Mauritius Kestrel, endangered skinks and of course, the giant tortoises.

When visiting Ile aux Aigrettes you will get to see breath-taking scenery of the South East of Mauritius, and will be given a glimpse of the early history of Mauritius. You will also get to see beautiful trees with strange names like Ox wood, Pipe wood, Rat wood and Bottle palm. There is also the chance to see a rare orchid in full bloom.

At the end of the tour, you will get to purchase souvenirs at the gift shop at the Visitors’ Centre.

All revenues from the tour on the islands and from the gift shop are reinvested in the restoration and preservations of Ile aux Aigrettes. Following the tour to Ile aux Aigrettes, you will travel by motor boat back to Pointe Jerome.

Curepipe

Curepipe
Curepipe is a town (population 81,600 in 2003) centrally situated in Mauritius, an island country in the southwest Indian Ocean. It is second in size and importance to Port Louis, the capital. The name originates from the practice of settlers coming to the town to refill, or "cure" their pipes. Curepipe is also referred to as "La Ville Lumière" (in English "The Town of Light") since it was the first town in the island to run on electricity.

Trou aux Cerfs
On the above picture you can observe the lake located in the crater of Trou aux Cerfs on the central plateau in Curepipe, Mauritius. Trou aux Cerfs is six hundred and five metres above sea level. When being up there you will have a spectacular view of part of Mauritius Island and make magnificent photos. While standing near the crater you will see the lake and listen the birds in the crater. It is considered as a dormant volcano, the volcano has been formed millions of years ago and was active 600,000 to 700,000 years ago. The crater of Trou aux Cerfs is eighty metres deep. Trou aux Cerfs is also one of the main attractions of Curepipe. It is a great experience for adults and children.
